Stuck in development
hell for who knows how many years, it sounds like the live-action adaptation of
Akira could finally (perhaps) get off the ground.
According to The
Tracking Board, Warner Bros. wants Jordan Peele to take the reins of Akira,
which previously belonged to the Hughes Brothers ("From Hell"),
Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars"), and most recently Jaume
Collet-Serra ("The Shallows"). The latter was closest to get the ball
rolling, but Warner ultimately decided that due to budget concerns the project
wouldn't go forward.
Peele of course has
become one of the hottest filmmakers on the market after smashing his directorial
debut with Get Out, a horror-thriller that cost $4.5 million
dollars to produce and that so far has taken in over $156 million worldwide.
"Welcome to Neo-Tokyo, built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by a
blast of unknown origin that triggered World War III. The lives of two
streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when paranormal
abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, making him a target for a shadowy agency
that will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like the one that
leveled Tokyo. At the core of the agency’s motivation is a raw, all-consuming
fear of an unthinkable, monstrous power known only as Akira."
Created by Katsuhiro Otomo and turned into an animation in 1988, Akira is not an
easy project to adapt into live-action, and that could be something that appeals
to Peele, however, the recently minted filmmaker has said that he is interested
in continuing to develop more "social thrillers."
