Having learned nothing from the second Spider-Man franchise, Sony put once
again the cart before the horse and well before the release of Paul Feig's
hotly debated Ghostbusters movie, announced a plan to create a universe for the
franchise, which included an animated movie and a spinoff starring Chris Pratt
and Channing Tatum.
Unfortunately, Feig's film received a very loud meh from fans, whom not
flocked into theaters to see the movie starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig,
Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon. Ultimately, the film only grossed $229 million
worldwide on a production budget of $144 million.
Speaking to io9, producer Ivan Reitman opened up about the film's poor box
office gross.
"We certainly
would’ve loved to have a larger hit," Reitman said. "But considering
the last film was almost 30 years ago, it really did extremely well. I think
the film cost too much, frankly, and that’s the real issue. I personally had
other points of view in terms of where the film should go and it was kind of a
continuous conversation with Paul [Feig] about that. But Paul was the filmmaker
on this one and he’s a very talented director. I wanted to give him enough room
to do the film he thought it should be."
However, despite the poor
reception Reitman hasn't given up on the new franchise, and while promoting
Ghostbusters VR: Now Hiring, the producer offered an update on the future
films.
""We jumped
into an animated film [after the last movie] and we are developing live-action
films," Reitman said. "I want to bring all these stories together as
a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do
that."
He hopes the animated film will
be in theaters in either 2019 or 2020 but can’t say for sure. "It depends
on how fast we can get it all together," Reitman said. "It’s hard to
make an animated film." Rather unsurprisingly, Reitman remained
tight-lipped about the live-action films."
What was great about
the original films that was severely lacking in the new one was the characters,
which we gave a damn about, and the humor, so perhaps instead of wasting time
and effort in coming up with an interconnected universe why not start with
those two and then see what comes next?
