Amy
Schumer has dropped out of Sony's Barbie movie, in which she was supposed to
play the lead character.
"Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to
scheduling conflicts," Schumer said Thursday in a statement. "The
film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed,
but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen."
Schumer, who had joined the project back in December,
managed to polish the script by Hilary Winston before departing.
"We respect and support Amy’s decision," a spokesperson
for Sony said. "We look forward to bringing Barbie to the
world and sharing updates on casting and filmmakers soon."
Produced by Mattel, Walter F. Parkes, Laurie
MacDonald, and Amy Pascal, the Barbie movie's goals are to try and put a
contemporary spin on beauty, feminism, and identity. Basically, the movie will
try to address all of the image issues that have plagued the plastic doll in more
recent times.
Currently without a director, the movie is set to come
out in June 29, 2018.
