Merely two days after directors Chris Miller and Phil
Lord were let go from the anticipated Star Wars spinoff film centered on a
young Han Solo, Lucasfilm is now announcing that Academy Award-winning
filmmaker Ron Howard has been named the director of the untitled project.
"At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of
each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George
Lucas began forty years ago," said Kathleen Kennedy, president of
Lucasfilm. "With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard
will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script,
an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie.
Filming will resume the 10th
of July."
According to several reports Miller and Lord, whom by
the time they were let go had spent over four-and-a-half months directing,
clashed with writer Lawrence Kasdan ("Empire Strikes Back," "Raiders
of the Lost Ark") over style and tone, with the studio ultimately backing
the screenwriter and not the directors.
The film still had three-and-a-half weeks of filming
left, with five more weeks already set aside for reshoots. Production will now
resume on July 10 with Howard attached to salvage the project.
Starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia
Clarke, Michael K. Williams, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, Ian Kenny, and
Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The untitled Han Solo film is slated for a May 25,
2018, release.
