Despite its
commercial and critical success, Universal Pictures is finding it difficult to
get a third installment in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise off the
ground, having moved its release date several times.
Originally scheduled
to premiere in June of this year, Universal shifted the release date of the
DreamWorks production to 2017, but in January of last year, the studio moved
the date once again to 2018, and now according to a press release from the Universal,
How to Train Your Dragon 3 will only hit theaters on Friday, March 1 of 2019.
Returning cast
members Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J.
Miller, Craig Ferguson, Gerard Butler, and America Ferrara among others reteam
with writer/director Dean DeBlois who has previously stated that How to Train
Your Dragon 3 will conclude Hiccup (Baruchel) and Toothless’ coming of age
story.
"As Hiccup fulfills
his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an
untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at
home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must
make impossible decisions to save their kind."
