John Wick director
Chad Stahelski has boarded the long gestating Highlander reboot for Lionsgate.
"I've been a huge fan of the original property
since I saw it in high school," Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter.
"Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up
in such colorful mythology. I can't think of a better property that gives the
opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set
pieces."
The project has been stuck in development hell ever
since Summit, a Lionsgate owned label, acquired the rights to the property in
2008, with many directors, including Justin Lin, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, and
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, coming and going.
Lionsgate is currently looking for writers to work
with the
director and finally get the ball rolling on what they expect will be their
next major franchise.
The original 1986
film starred Christopher Lambert as an immortal Scottish swordsman, who must battle
to the death other immortals for the fabled Prize. Along the way he befriends
and trains with an Egyptian immortal played by Sean Connery, and becomes locked
in a centuries old fight with the infamous Kurgan, a Russian immortal played by
Clancy Brown.
The film spawned four
other sequels, several made for TV movies, various short-lived television shows
and a successful one starring Adrian Paul, and one anime movie.
Stahelski recently
wrapped John Wick: Chapter 2, which opens in theaters on February 10, 2017.
