Common Cast In Black Samurai TV Series

Common is set to lead Black Samurai, an upcoming television show based on Marc Olden 1974 series of novels with Andre Gaines and Wu-Tang Clan's RZA as executive producers.

Gaines, who was an associate producer on Spike Lee's comedy Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, purchased the rights to the books and is currently looking for a network. Once a home is found, they will begin searching for a writer and director.

When terrorists butcher his sensei, a samurai takes vengeance in blood!

On leave in Tokyo, American GI Robert Sand (Common) is shot trying to protect an old man from a quartet of drunk American soldiers. As Sand passes out, the old man springs on his tormenters, beating them senseless with frail, wrinkled fists. He is Master Konuma, keeper of the ancient secrets of the samurai, and Sand is about to become his newest pupil. Over the next seven years, the American learns martial arts, swordplay, and stealth, becoming not just the first black man to ever take the oath of the samurai, but the strongest fighter Konuma has ever trained.

One night, two dozen terrorists ambush the dojo, slaughtering Konuma and his students as the first step in a terrifying assault on world peace. Though he cannot save his sensei, Sand escapes with his life and a gnawing hunger for vengeance. All he has is his sword, but his sword is all he needs.

"Robert Sand is like black Jason Bourne. Black Samurai is one of the most unique, timely and fun experiences I’ve ever read, while at the same time tackling some serious subjects around race and diversity," Gaines told Variety. "With ‘John Wick 2’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ coming up, Common was an obvious choice for the role, and I’m thrilled to have him on board. I believe he’s the next great American actor."

Wu Film's Mitchell Diggs and Diane Crawford will alongside Gaines and RZA also executive producing Black Samurai.

Together with John Legend, Common won an Oscar in 2015 for best original score with Selma's Glory.
