Rosa Salazar
has booked the lead role in the upcoming adaptation of Yukito Kishio's '90s cyberpunk
manga Battle Angel Alita, which James Cameron will produce and Robert Rodriguez
will direct.
In Battle
Angel Alita, the people and cyborgs of the
Scrapyard live beneath the floating and ruling city of Tiphares, whose trash
pours down below. One day Ido, a former Tipharean citizen and doctor
specializing in cyborg repairs, finds the intact head of young cyborg-girl in a
huge pile of scrap. He takes her in, fixes her, and gives her a name, Alita.
Still amnesiac, but with knowledge of long forgotten fighting techniques, Alita
decides to become a bounty collector.
Originally set to direct but unable to accommodate the
project with his ambitious Avatar schedule, Cameron decided to pass on the
directing torch to genre filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who will be working of a
budget set between the $175 million to $200 million range.
Last month we reported that Salazar was one of several
actresses up for the role. The list included It Follows breakout star Maika
Monroe and Disney Channel's Zendaya.
