Ewan
McGregor has signed to play a double-role on the upcoming third season of FX's
hit anthology series based on Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 crime drama Fargo.
The Scottish
actor will headline the third season of the series where he will play brothers
Emmit and Ray Stussy. The season will center on Emmit, a self-made estate mogul
and family man from Minnesota, and his slightly younger, bald, and potbellied
brother Ray, a parole officer who reached his peak in high school and who
begrudges his brother for the life he doesn't have.
"None of the main
characters from our first year will be back for our third year," series creator Noah Hawley told THR last year. "As much
as I love those actors and characters, the dangers of bringing them back and
putting them through their paces for another sort of crazy case is that then
the artifice of the whole thing becomes too clear, and suddenly it just feels
like we're doing it because it's fun and we like them, but we've broken our own
rules," he said. "That's not to say that one of our stories might not
intersect with characters we've seen before for a certain period of time."
Production on Fargo's third
season will begin later this year for a 2017 premiere.
