Shortlist Of Lead Candidates For Robert Rodriguez & James Cameron's Battle Angel Alita

With the Avatar sequels taking over his life for next several years, James Cameron has handed the baton for the big screen adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's sci-fi action Japanese manga series Battle Angel Alita over to Robert Rodriguez, who has been looking for just the right actress to take on the leading role.

Several names such as Oscar nominee Rinko Kikuchi ("Babel", "Pacific Rim") and Shailene Woodley ("The Divergent Series", "Snowden") were at one point rumored as possible contenders for the lead role in the film, but now it seems that the search has been narrowed to a trio of strong actresses.

According to reports, Zendaya, Maika Monroe, and Rosa Salazar have risen to the top of the list to play Alita. Zendaya is a Disney Channel superstar who recently booked a mysterious role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Monroe broke out with the indie horror films The Guest and It Follows, and will next be seen in Roland Emmerich's Independent Day: Resurgence. And Salazar, she has appeared in a variety of movies and TV shows like American Horror Story, Parenthood, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, and Insurgent.

Another name that has been thrown into the ring is that of the Scream: The TV Series and The Duff actress Bella Thorne, who according to reports has over the last few months read for the part.

In Battle Angel Alita, the people and cyborgs of the Scrapyard live beneath the floating and ruling city of Tiphares, whose trash pours down below. One day Ido, a former Tipharean citizen and doctor specializing in cyborg repairs, finds the intact head of young cyborg-girl in a huge pile of scrap. He takes her in, fixes her, and gives her a name, Alita. Still amnesiac, but with knowledge of long forgotten fighting techniques, Alita decides to become a bounty collector.
