A
handful of movies in, and Hollywood still hasn't cracked the code to make a successful
(either creatively or financially you pick) manga adaptation, but doesn't mean
they won't try anyway.
One
of the upcoming attempts is the adaptation of author Takeshi Obata's Death Note,
with Adam Wingard (You're Next) directing, and Paper Town's Nat Wolff starring.
Speaking
to Collider, producer Roy Lee revealed that Wingard "is currently waiting
for us to officially greenlight the movie, but we have a cast in place. I think
it’s been reported but I don’t remember yet, I’d have to check the site, so I
don’t want to say anything yet. But it’s a movie we’re planning on making this
year."
Death Note is a horror manga that centers on a student
named Light, who discovers a supernatural notebook that gives him the ability
to kill anyone he chooses simply by writing that person's name on it. When
Light decides to take upon himself to eradicate the World from evil, a
reclusive police officer known only as L appears and a game of cat-and-mouse
begins.
When
asked about what rating they were going for, Lee said "it’s definitely for
adults. It is zero chance it will be below an R-rating," as for the tone
it "will be one of the first manga adaptations that feels very grounded
but still has fantastical elements."
Finally,
Lee seems "fairly confident" that production will begin this year.
Death
Note does not have a release date yet.
