Netflix has expanded
its 2013 deal with DreamWorks Animation, securing the distribution rights to
the studio's film library, original series already available on the streaming
platform like Dragon: Race to the Edge or The Adventures of Puss in Boots, and
new content for years to come.
Several new shows
have already been announced and they include a reimagining of the 1980s sci-fi
cartoon, Voltron, and a fantasy series from Oscar-nominated director Guillermo
del Toro called Trollhunters. Both shows will launch in 2016.
"DreamWorks
Animation is synonymous with great storytelling that families around the world
enjoy," said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Series for Netflix
in a statement. "It's with great pleasure that we expand on an already
successful relationship with DreamWorks Animation to bring more premium kids and
family television to Netflix members globally."
The agreement also
stipulates that the new shows will be based on both recent and upcoming DreamWorks
Animation movies as well as other intellectual properties that the studio will develop
an produce for Netflix.
