Empire Magazine's 2016-movie preview
issue has hit the stands and among the films highlighted, including the Coen
brothers' Hail, Caesar! or Justin Lin's Star
Trek Beyond, it features some new information about one of the most anticipated
movies of the year, Marvel's Doctor Strange.
As with any movie of this dimension
and anticipation, there were a couple of rumors floating around even before all
the pieces had come together, and one rumor stated that Marvel was thinking
about skipping giving Doctor Strange an origin story, which seemed bizarre since
the majority of the audience doesn't know who the character is, and yet somewhat
interesting.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige as since debunked
this idea, but now he adds that while Strange will indeed have an origin story,
it will be quite different from those that came before. "It couldn't be
any more different than any of the films that have come before it," he
explains.
But it's not just in the way the
character is introduced that Doctor Strange will differ from the rest of the
movies in the cinematic universe. Aesthetically, Doctor Strange will also be
quite different, colorful, and bold. "We see glimpses of something called the Dark
Dimension," Feige said, but don't let the name fool you. "If
you were to open a Doctor Strange comic drawn by Steve Ditko, you would see the
Dark Dimension, is in fact, very colorful in an extremely psychedelic way. Those
are the things we're not shying away from."
In the comics, the Dark Dimension is a mystic realm with
natural gateways into other universes. Residents of the Dark Dimension are Clea,
Doctor Strange's love interest, Dormammu, Doctor Strange's sworn nemesis, and
Umar, Clea's mother and Dormammu's sister.
Opening on November 4, 2016 Doctor Strange stars Benedict
Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Rachel McAdams as Night Nurse, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron
Mordo, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, Mads Mikkelsen as the yet unknown
but confirmed main villain, and Amy Landecker.
