Much to his and Lawrence Kasdan's credit, J.J. Abrams
did more than just sprinkle some nostalgia dust over Star Wars: The Force
Awakens, he also helped laid the foundation to new mythology with the
introduction of new characters like Supreme Leader Snoke, Finn, and Rey.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Star Wars: Episode
IX director Colin Trevorrow confesses that he has seen the theories about who Rey's
parents could be, and gives his word that all will eventually be answered in a
satisfying way.
"I’ve seen all of the theories…," he said. "What
I do know is that we’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and
profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this
universe, not just in the context of The
Force Awakens but
in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer
is something that feels like it was—it’s something that happened a long time
ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened."
More so than Finn, Rey's backstory seems at this point
like it will become the crux (or one of them) of future movies, but when will
it be revealed? Judging how The Force Awakens ended, Rian Johnson's Episode
VIII seemed like a sure bet, but hearing Trevorrow speak about the subject, it
almost sounds like he and his writing partner Derek Connolly will be the ones
tackling Rey's past.
Trevorrow also spoke in broad strokes about what Episode
IX needs to be, and his commitment in getting there.
"By the time we get to Episode IX, I look
at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies.
It’s something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of
40 years… Star
Wars is a
belief system, it’s not just a story and it’s not just a movie, and it’s
something I take very seriously."
It will be interesting to see what lies beyond Episode
IX. Will Star Wars continue to focus on the Skywalker family, or will we see
someone else be the center of attention?
