After landing a yet unknown role in Gareth Edward's
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Ben Mendelsohn has now been offered the main
antagonist role in Steven Spielberg's upcoming big screen adaption of Ernest
Cline's geek Ready Player One.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendelsohn is in
early negotiations to play "an executive for an Internet corporation that
has designs on Oasis." The character's name isn't disclosed, but the
description should ring some bells to those that have read the nostalgia-filled
novel, since it sounds perfectly like Nolan Sorrento.
Taking place in the year 2044, Ready Player One follows
Wade Watts, a teenager who only really feels alive when he's jacked into the
virtual "utopia" known as OASIS, created by James Halliday.
There, Parzival, Wade's avatar, tries to do what no other player has been able
to, find last Easter Egg left behind by the game creator, and win the big
prize, OASIS itself.
Opening on December 15, 2017, Ready Player One already
stars Olivia Cooke as Art3mis, the female lead, and Wade's crush and rival in
the OASIS. Wade has yet
to be cast.
