Movies based on video
games have been predominately bad, with maybe one or two barely escaping with a
so bad it's good sticker on it, but those are drops in an ocean of painful and dull
experiences. But there is hope!
Michael Fassbender
recently sat down with The Wall Street Journal to talk about his portrayal of
Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle's movie of the same name with a script by Aaron
Sorkin, his second Oscar nomination, and his first movie based on a video game,
which he not only stars in but also produces.
"It was
great," Fassbender said of working on Assassin's Creed. "It was a huge learning
experience. To be a producer on it as well was very educational. I think we’ve
got something special. I think we’ve done something original in this
genre."
In the movie,
Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, who the actor describes as being an outsider,
who has "been institutionalized from his early teens. He’s a little bit of
a lost soul of sorts. He starts to identify [his] lineage and where he comes
from in a way."
Directed by Justin
Kurzel, whom Fassbender worked with in Macbeth, Assassin's Creed also stars Jeremy Irons, Marion
Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Michael K. Williams, and Ariane
Labed.
Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories,
Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor,
Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a
mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and
skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the
present day.
Assassin's Creed opens on December
21.
