Steve Coogan and John
C. Reilly have joined Jon S. Baird's (Filth) upcoming biopic about the
legendary comedic duo, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Coogan will play Laurel
and Reilly will play Hardy.
The story will follow
Stan and Ollie during their 1953 variety tour of Great Britain, years after
their "golden age" in a time when their future was uncertain. Little
by little the show becomes a hit when they re-connect with fans, old and new. Their
newly found success however does not seem destined to last, as old ghosts emerge
and Ollie's health begins to fail.
For Academy Award
nominee screenwriter Jeff Pope (Philomena) writing Stan & Ollie is a dream
since they are his heroes, but says he will not shy away of their flaws and
shortcomings.
"I am aware of
the huge responsibility of bringing their characters to life, but I have not
treated the boys with kid gloves or looked at them through rose coloured specs.
They are living and breathing characters, with flaws and shortcomings."
Pope will executive produce
the project under his Sonesta Films shingle alongside Faye Ward's Fable
Pictures, BBC Films.
