Among the many new
characters in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Lupita Nyong'o's petit
thousand-year-old former space pirate Maz Kanata is particularly interesting.
Imagine the history and knowledge Kanata has gathered over the centuries, plus
she knew Yoda, wait what?
During the global
press day for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mindy Kaling, who was the moderator
at hand for the event, asked Lupita in a very forthright manner what was Maz'
relationship with Yoda, which prompted a quick response from Abrams' who said
that in an attempt to save Lupita from that awesomely geeky question, he
believes "that Maz and Yoda at one point had crossed paths. But that is
not something, of course, due to the events of past films, that happens in this
one."
Nyong'o also chimed
in and joked that "he (Yoda) was my first loved", to which Kaling
said she would love to see made into a movie.
I'm not sure if
Kaling had access to inside information, if she was merely reading from
questions provided by Lucasfilm, or if it was a spontaneous moment, but the
fact that Maz Kanata and Yoda know each other could be significant for the
development of the plot, as well as setting up things for future films.
Star Wars: The Force
Awakens opens on December 18.
