It seems Sony
Pictures have picked their gunslinger for the upcoming adaptation of the
Stephen King novel, The Dark Tower.
According to
Deadline, Idris Elba has moved up the list and has become the frontrunner to
play Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower, where he would star opposite Matthew
McConaughey, who is in talks to play the nefarious Man in Black.
Despite already being
a star in many people's eyes, Elba never had that project or franchise that
would catapult him to true stardom and The Dark Tower could certainly be it,
and while I would love to see him play the next James Bond after Daniel Craig,
The Dark Tower provides Elba with the opportunity to make the character his.
In King's novels Deschain
is white (at least in the covers), but being the talented actor that he is, I have
no question that he can pull Deschain
off. Think more in terms of Luther than Stringer Bell, and we may just have a
winner.
Danish filmmaker
Nikolaj Arcel, who was nominated for an Oscar for A Royal Affair and co-wrote
the original The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo movie, is directing and is working
with Oscar winner Anders Thomas Jensen (Election Night) on the script.
Sony and Media Rights
Capital have envisioned The Dark Tower as a franchise with a complementary TV
series. The first installment is being pulled from The Gunslinger, the first
book in King's series, which establishes the relationship between Deschain and
his young protégé Jake Chambers.
