David Fincher has decided on what
his follow up to House of Cards will be. The filmmaker, who directed a couple
of episodes and acts as executive producer of the Netflix series has teamed up
with Oscar winning actress Charlize Theron on a new drama series titled Mindhunter,
for which he has recruited British playwright and screenwriter Brit Joe Penhall
(Blue/Orange and Sunny Afternoon).
Based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the
FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, by former special agent John Douglas and Mark
Olshaker, the new Netflix show goes behind the scenes of some of Douglas'
highest profile cases such as Trailside Killer in San Francisco, and the
Atlanta Child murderer, as well as his interviews and research on Charles
Manson, Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy, and James Earl Ray.
For a bit of movie
and TV trivia, Douglas served as inspiration for Jack Crawford in Thomas
Harris' The Silence of the Lambs, and Will Graham in Red Dragon, played by
Scott Glenn and Edward Norton, respectively, in the movie adaptations. Douglas
also inspired the character of Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin) on CBS procedural
show, Criminal Minds.
Theron will executive produce the
show through her Denver and Delilah Production Company, whose credits include Young
Adult, Hatfields & McCoys, and Monster.
