Mahershala
Ali is
the latest actor to join Marvel's Luke Cage (Mike Colter) live-action series on Netflix. Yesterday we found
out that Simone Missick (Ray Donovan) had joined the show and would be playing
the highly decorated police officer Misty Knight. Now, we jump to the other side of the law
with news that Ali will bring his "extraordinary range and
gravitas" to Cornell Stokes, aka Cottonmouth, a Harlem nightclub owner who
uses the club to run his criminal enterprise.
In the comics, Cottonmouth was a drug lord and a pimp.
In fact, the heroin used to frame Luke Cage and send him to prison was stolen
from him. The character is not to be confused with the other Cottonmouth from
the Marvel Comics, who dresses as a snake and his part of the Serpent Society.
Ali has been in a variety of
projects over the years like Crossing Jordan, The 4400, The Curious Case of
Benjamin Button, Predators, The Place Beyond the Pines, Treme, Alphas, House of
Cards, and The hunger Games franchise.
Ray Donovan and Southland's Cheo Hodari Coker wrote
the first couple of episodes of Luke Cage, and will act as the series
showrunner and executive producer.
Luke Cage also stars Alfre Woodard as Minetta, Rosario
Dawson as Claire Temple, and Theo Rossi as Shades.
Luke Cage is currently in production for a possible
2016 premiere.
