After a problematic production pushed Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam
Taylor-Johnson and screenwriter Kelly Marcel away from the sequel, Universal is
now closing in on a new director for Fifty Shades Darker after giving the
script duties to Niall Leonard, E.L. James' husband.
Now, according to THR, Universal has narrowed down the list of possible
directors for the sequel to three, and they are James Foley, Mark Pellington,
and Tanya Wexler.
Foley, who is said to be the top contender for the job, is best known for
Fear and the David Mamet play turned movie, Glengarry Glen Ross, as well as a
number of episodes from the acclaimed Netflix series, House of Cards.
Pellington's is best known for the thriller Arlington Road starring Jeff
Bridges and Tim Robbins, The Mothman Prophecies starring Laura Linney and
Richard Gere, the TV show Cold Case, and a number of music videos.
As for Wexler, she doesn't have much to her name. In 1998 the filmmaker
directed the romcom Finding North, which she followed with another in 2001 titled
Ball in the House, and with another one in 2011 titled Hysteria starring Maggie
Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy and followed the discovery of the vibrator.
Described as more of a thriller, 50 Shades Darker follows Anastasia (Dakota
Johnson) as she explores more of Christian Grey's (Jamie Dornan) world of
S&M, and eventually meets with his former lovers.
Whoever ends up sitting on the director's chair will not have an easy time.
The clash between James and Taylor-Johnson were made very public, when just before
the film's release the director revealed that James was slightly bullish and
opinionated about the project.
Fifty Shades Darker is scheduled to hit theaters on Valentine's Day of
2017.
