It looks like Marvel has
zeroed in on Benedict Cumberbatch's mentor in director Scott Derrickson's upcoming
take on Doctor Strange.
According to The Hollywood
Reporter, Tilda Swinton is in negotiations with Marvel Studios to play The
Ancient One in the studios' first supernatural film, and hero.
The Ancient One is a Tibetan
mystic who was Earth's first Sorcerer Supreme, and has such he trained many who
he hoped would be worthy and strong enough to succeed him and receive the
Amulet of Agamotto, which he had received from Eternity, the sentient
embodiment of the universe. Among his many students are Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict
Cumberbatch), and Baron Karl Mordo whose evil ambition made him one of Doctor
Strange's primary foes.
Tilda Swinton is a terrific
actress, and though it was initially reported that Morgan Freeman and Ken
Watanabe were up for the role, Swinton's talent is undeniable.
If the actress boards the
project it will be her third comic book adaptation following Constantine in 2005 where she played Gabriel, and Snowpiercer in 2013 where she played Mason.
