We know through various reports and subsequent public confirmations that the
50 Shades of Grey production was more agonizing than any pain the utensils in Mr.
Grey's Red Room could inflict.
We learned not to long ago that the problematic production led not only to
the departure from director Sam Taylor-Johnson due to conflicts with James, but
also screenwriter Kelly Marcel, who according to reports clashed with the
author's better half, and uncredited screenwriter Niall Leonard.
After production ended and creativity left the sequels, rumors started
flying around that James had asked Universal and Focus to pen the sequel
herself. Well, it seems that that was indeed a rumor as according to The
Hollywood Reporter, James' husband Leonard will be the one penning the highly (?)
anticipated sequel, Fifty Shades Darker.
Leonard's credits are small, and not terribly impressive, but at least it's
all in the family, so any bickering over what is adapted probably won't be
rushing out to the press.
In all honesty, if someone is to blame for this turn out of events it's both
studios, whom decided to give E.L. James so much control over the franchise.
Most adapted authors get besides the truckload of money for the rights, a created
by credit, and maybe some input in the production, but not as much as James,
who literally has control over almost everything, including screenwriter,
script, director, and so on, and so on.
I almost couldn't find any redeemable qualities in the film, but one can't
argue with the numbers. The film has managed to gross over $560 million
worldwide, which for a rated R film is impressive.
