Dragonball Evolution, Speed Racer, Kite, Oldboy, Hollywood is not
particularly successful at adapting mangas, so it is all the more surprising when
two very popular works of Japanese comics, and animation are all of the "sudden"
being rushed.
We know that director Rupert
Sanders will start shooting the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson
early next year for DreamWorks, and now according to The Hollywood Reporter director Adam Wingard (You're Next, The Guest) has been tapped by
Warner Bros. to helm the supernatural thriller Death Note created by Tsugumi
Ohba.
Death Note centers on a student called Light who
discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing the
victim’s name on it. After testing the
book, Light is joined by shinigami (Death God) named Ryuk, and tells him of his
plan to cleanse the world of whom he deems evil. Many deaths later, an Interpol
officer tracks the student, and both of them engage in a game of cat-and-mouse.
Having read only a couple of volumes
from the manga, but watched the anime, and the first live-action film, I can
say that it is not too farfetched of a concept (like other mangas) that it
won't work on the big-screen. However, I'm keen to see how they will adapt the
supernatural portion of it, since shinigamis are not exactly the faceless grim
reapers in western societies.
Wingard will
start shooting Death Note after he wraps up The Woods.
Gus Van Sant, and Shane Black were
previously onboard to direct the project that is being produced by Masi Oka,
Roy Lee, Dan Lin, and Jason Hoffs.
