Despite having some
flaws, John Wick was one of last year's best action films. It wasn't a huge hit
at the box-office, but it didn't flop either, and thanks to a fanbase that
seems to be growing day by day, the likelihood that a sequel is on its way is
now more certain than it ever was.
Speaking to
Movies.com, directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch confirmed that a sequel is
in fact in the development stages. They did not confirm if Keanu Reeves is
coming back or not, but say that although the action will outdo the ones from
the first film, the most important thing right now is to get a good story and
develop the character.
"We have ideas
for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the
original,” Stahelski said. “It’s the matter of story and how much you like the
character. That’s always the most important. If there’s great action but you
have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma you’re not going
to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam
Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action,
bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a
story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action
that we promise will be awesome."
I really enjoyed John
Wick. The plot was simple and efficient. It didn't fall (like so many do) in
the traps of convoluted twists and absurd premises. It seemed to some extent,
real enough that it made me belief that this world really existed, and that
these characters were real. I think the Continental Hotel run by Ian McShane's Winston
character, that caters to assassins, and that has very specific rules was one
of the best parts of the film, and hopefully we get to know more about that
mythos in the sequel.
