Back in November, and a couple
of decades later 20th Century Fox decided that a sequel to Roland Emmerich's 1996
Independence Day was what we all desperately needed. For fans, this was great
news, a bit late as I said, but great news nonetheless. Well half of the
enthusiasm went down the drain when it was made known that Will Smith wasn't
planning on reprising his Captain Steven Hiller role from the first movie. As
for Jeff Goldblum it's unclear whether he is in or not, I know he had some
talks with Emmerich, but until something official comes out, I can't say for
sure he is onboard. Regardless at least half of the star power the original
movie had wasn't coming back, so new blood is needed.
According to The Wrap, Liam
Hemsworth, best known for playing Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games franchise,
was offered the starring role in the sequel, which is being called ID Forever.
The possible casting of Liam
for the starring role clashes with what we already knew of the project. Prior
to Will Smith's decline to make the film there were two scripts for ID Forever,
one where he was the star, and another one (in case he didn't agree to make the
film) where his son (rumored to be played by Michael B. Jordan) was the lead.
So casting Liam in the lead role doesn't match with either of these two
versions that Emmerich himself revealed a few months back, unless they changed
it from Smith's son to Goldblum's son, which I don't believe he had in the
film, but even so the film was 20 years ago, and Liam doesn't pass for a
20-year-old.
