Some time ago, Constantine producer,
David S. Goyer revealed that they were in talks with NBC about allowing John
Constantine to smoke in the show. Now however, pilot episode director, Neil
Marshall, confirms that the character won't smoke.
Speaking to Collider, Marshall says
that they had to compromise with NBC on having Constantine smoke on the series.
"No
we’re not. It’s the one thing, a compromise I guess. On network it’s the one
thing you can’t smoke on network. That’s one of his character traits. We’re
working around that. We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as
possible. We’ll see."
I can try to understand, why NBC doesn't want smoking
on the series, I mean we don't want kids to think it's cool to smoke, no!, no!
I mean it's not like there are worst things on tv, like a mother being shot in
the head by her own son, someone being pushed in front an incoming subway car,
or crazy orgies, No! No! Parents tell your kids that those are fine because
they are fiction. Wait...
Sorry for the little sarcastic rant, besides I'm sure
he will be playing with his Zippo from time to time. Moving on.
If smoking is literally out of the picture, the tone
will still be faithful to the original source material, as Marshall says they
are going as dark and disturbing as they can.
"Hannibal
is on NBC, and that’s pretty dark and disturbing. Whatever the regulations are,
you can be as dark and disturbing as you want and we’re going to go in that
direction. The intention is to be as dark and scary as possible with the show.
And that was our whole kind of plan going in, to make it scary. So we’re going
to explore all kinds of things. But the smoking is very frustrating. Who knows
where it will go; where the story will go; where the character will go? There’s
still lots of options."
Constantine stars Matt
Ryan, Lucy Griffiths, Harold Perrineau, and Charles Halford.
