Old Chinese Star Wars Comic Book Adaptation Surfaces

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, aka China, an adaptation of George Lucas' Star Wars was made. The comic book or lianhuanhua as it's called there, dates from 1980 and is titled Xing Qiu Da Zhan (Chinese for Star Wars).

The comic was "discovered" by an assistant history professor at Montana State University, Maggie Greene, who purchased the work for about a dollar at a Shanghai book fair in 2010/2011, while researching for her dissertation.

The comic gets the basics of Lucas Star Wars right, but with a few minor adjustments. Chewbacca for instance looks like he came out of Planet of the Apes. Greene says that this and other differences are probably due to the fact that Star Wars, which was released in Hong Kong never made its way to mainland China, so the illustrator of the book probably worked from the limited promotional materials without ever actually seeing the film.

Check out Greene's blog for the full story, and see the full comic here.
