In
an interview to IGN, Pacific Rim’s screenwriter Travis Beacham talked about the
biology of the Kaiju and the technology behind the Jeager.
Kaiju:
“They
each have different abilities. One of them that has a kind of electrical
ability, they emit certain toxic fluids, they have surprise appendages that you
don’t necessarily know about. Each Kaiju comes with its own set of grizzly
abilities and surprises.”
“The
blood is phosphorescent, and it’s also extraordinarily toxic. It has kind of a
glowing black light effect when it’s freshly bleeding. It’s a condition that’s
called in the movie, Kaiju blue, and at the
same time that it’s very sort of
pretty looking, it’s also extremely dangerous. When we were first thinking
about it, something that these kinds of stories usually just gloss over is you
know, the monster comes in, you fight the monster, the monster’s dead – problem
solved. Well really that’s kind of the beginning of the problem because now you
have however many tons equivalent of rotting flesh in the middle of the city. I
mean it’s an enormous public health hazard.”
“You
will see something that is not Earth in the film, I’ll say that… The
Kaiju aren’t necessarily the responsible party. There’s a lot going on in
the other universe, some of which you’ll get a glimpse of from the movie, but
it is every bit as complex and crazy over there as it is on our side of the
breach.”
Jaeger:
“The
idea that let us realize that this was a human story was the idea that it takes
to pilots to drive a Jaeger. That puts human relationships literally at the
core of the robot in the battle. Suddenly it matters to the battle, and to the
people that they are defending, that the two people are driving this robot get
along, and that they trust one another, and that they have a firm relationship
between them.”
Starring
Charlie Hunnam from Sons of Anarchy, Ron Perlman from Hellboy, Idris Elba from Luther, Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Clifton
Collins Jr. from Star Trek, Robert Maillet from Sherlock Holmes, Rinko Kikuchi from The Brothers Bloom, Heather Doerksen from Battlestar Galactica and Brad William Henke from Justified. The movie is due to arrive at theaters on the 12th of July of
this summer.
Pacific
Rim Official Synopsis:
When legions
of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju started rising from the sea, a gigantic war breaks out to
save Humanity and its resources from possible annihilation. To stop these
monsters and win the war, a special type of weapon is developed, the Jaegers,
massive robots that are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are
connected in a neural bridge. The Jaeger can fight one on one
with the Kaiju since they are of the same size and power, but
not even they are proving to be powerful enough to stop the relentless Kaiju from
taking over the world and wipe out Humanity. On the verge of certain defeat,
the allied forces defending mankind have but little choice but to turn to two
of the most unlikely heroes on the force, an untested trainee Mako Mori played
by Rinko Kikuchi and Raleigh Becket a washed up
former pilot, played by Charlie Hunnam. Both of them (Rinko and Raleigh)
are teamed to drive the legendary but apparently completely obsolete Jaeger from
the past. The two unlikely heroes became the last hope for mankind as they
alone fight the Kaiju for the future of all Humanity.
