After cancelling director
Joseph Kosinski's Tron: Legacy sequel in 2015, Disney is now considering a new
entry in the franchise with Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto in the lead role.
No writer has been
hired to pen a script, but according to THR, the film, which isn't a direct
sequel to Legacy, will use the script from the 2015 cancelled movie as a
blueprint with Leto (should the film move forward) playing Ares, a new key character
to the franchise.
At this point, it's
unclear if Kosinski or any of the lead actors (Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde)
in Legacy will return.
Justin Springer, who
co-produced Tron: Legacy and exec produced the Tom Cruise sci-fi film Oblivion,
which Kosinski also directed, is set to produce with Leto and his producing
partner Emma Ludbrook expected to be involved in some producing capacity if the
project move forward.
The original 1982
movie starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner didn't break any box office
records, however the sequel (Legacy) managed to runway with $400 million
worldwide. For Disney though that wasn't enough, and in 2015 after several
false starts the studio decided to pull the plug on Tron 3.
