Now that Rogue One has
proven that there is a worldwide appetite for further Star Wars spinoff
stories, it is time to once again focus on the main saga.
Earlier this week,
Disney and Lucasfilm announced the official (and ominous) title for Rian
Johnson's highly anticipated follow-up to J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens: Star
Wars: The Last Jedi.
Now in an interview
to Empire, Johnson, who for obvious reasons didn't go into too much details,
offered some insight into his entry on the Star Wars universe such as what
non-Star Wars films served as inspiration for The Last Jedi.
"Twelve
O’Clock High was a big
touchstone, for the feel and look of the aerial combat as well as the dynamic
between the pilots. Three Outlaw Samurai for the feel of the
sword-fighting, and the general sense of pulpy fun. And To Catch A Thief was a great film to rewatch, for the
romantic scale and grandeur."
The writer/director, who is currently in the thick of
editing, was also asked about the writing process, specifically the dialogue.
"I found myself constantly wanting to push modern
idioms into the dialogue, and sometimes that can work, but you have to be very
careful. If you go too far you can break that Star Wars spell. The other challenge is
the tech talk, which has to be simultaneously complex enough to sound real and
conceptually simple enough to follow. The original films were
brilliant at that."
Opening in theaters on December 15, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Domhnall Gleeson, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Gwendoline Christie, Lupita Nyong'o, Andy Serkis, Peter Mayhew, Laura Dern, Anthony Daniels, Benicio Del Toro, and Warwick Davis.
