After nearly three decades of squandered potential, it looks like one of the most seminal sci-fi
action franchises in film history is getting a much-deserved breath of fresh
air in 2019 when James Cameron regains some of the rights to his iconic creation
back.
According to
Deadline, Cameron, who has been noticeable absent from the property since Terminator
2: Judgment Day is steering a "reboot and a conclusion of one of cinema's
greatest science fiction tales," with Tim Miller, who made an extremely
successful directorial debut with Deadpool, said to be in early talks to helm
the project.
Details are sparse
and under wraps, but the news outlet also reports that Skydance boss David
Ellison, who produced and co-financed Terminator: Genisys, is banking this
latest effort with what seems to be a writer's room composed of "top-flight
science fiction authors to find the movie creatively."
Genisys cost $155
million before marketing, and grossed over $440 million worldwide, however it
wasn't enough to grant the endearing franchise a new installment. The 2015 film
wasn't wall received by critics and fans alike, and almost didn't registered in
the U.S. box office chart.
As for Miller, he has
yet to confirm his next directorial effort, but he is attached as a producer to
the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and is in the process of developing an adaptation
of the sci-fi novel Influx for 20th Century Fox.
