It looks like the Gunslinger has taken an unexpected
detour in his quest to follow the Man in Black across the desert.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Sony has decided to
push back the release of The Dark Tower, and give director Nikolaj Arcel time
to finish the VFX heavy project, as well as have to time to properly market the
ambitious yet cheap ($60M production budget) film.
"It’s
a very fiscally responsible budget, and trying to stay in budget to make money
and stay profitable means the VFX won’t be finished in time [for February],"
one source tells EW. "Now that there’s more time, they’re not paying rush
charges to get the effects where they need to be."
The
Dark Tower will then shift its original release date from February 17 of 2017
to a yet unspecified day in the summer of that same year.
Based on Stephen King's sprawling apocalyptic saga,
The Dark Tower stars "Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, a.k.a. The Gunslinger and
Matthew McConaughey as a sorcerer known as the Man in Black, both of whom are
on separate quests to reach the mystical Dark Tower that stands at the center
of numerous dimensions." However, while one wants to bring it down and unleash
chaos (Man in Black) upon existence, the other (Gunslinger) wants to prevent
such a thing from happening.
Last month, Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman
revealed that fans should expect to see the first trailer around Christmas
time, but now that the film has been delayed by several months, it is unclear
if that will indeed happen.
The film is not based on any one specific book, instead
writers Arcel, Anders Thomas Jensen, and Akiva Goldsman picked and choose
elements from King's several novels, short stories, and even comic books that
housed The Dark Tower story. King himself, while not an official consultant on
the project, has helped guide the story as well as polish some of the dialogue.
