Max Landis ("Chronicle") in set to both
write the script and direct the remake of his father John Landis 1981 classic comedy horror film An American Werewolf in London for Universal Pictures.
Although Universal is still negotiating a deal with
Landis junior, Landis senior and Anthony Waller ("An American Werewolf in
Paris") have already reached an agreement with the studio over the rights
to the franchise.
The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman and David Albert are
producing through their Skybound Entertainment banner.
Todd Garner ("Scouts Guide to the Zombie
Apocalypse") and Matt Smith ("Maleficent") are also producing,
with John Landis executive producing alongside Broken Road's Sean Robbins and
Andy Trapani, who told Deadline that he has been working on the remake for
nearly a decade.
In the original film, which Landis senior also wrote, "while wandering the English moors on vacation, college
yanks David (David Naughton) and Jack (Griffin Dunne) happen upon a quaint pub
with a mysterious patronage who warn them not to leave the road when walking
after dark. Irreverent of such advice as characters in horror films always are,
the two decide to find a short cut....David wakes up in the hospital with a
nasty bite wound to his shoulder; the freshly deceased, and rapidly
decomposing, Jack arrives soon after to deliver the grim news that, unless he
commits suicide, David will become a werewolf when the moon is full. David
dismisses the encounter as a hallucination, but all indicators point to
lycanthrope; evenings of barking and bloodletting follow closely behind." Iconic makeup artist Rick Baker won his first Academy
Award for his amazing work on the film.
