Legendary Entertainment has announced
the acquisition of the film and television rights to Frank Herbert's iconic
sci-fi novel Dune.
The deal (as you might have guessed
it) is to develop both a television series and film for a global audience, with
Legendary's Thomas Tull, Mary Parent and Cale Boyter producing, and Brian
Herbert (Frank's son), Kim Herbert (Frank's granddaughter), and Byron Merritt
acting as executive producers.
"Set
on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of
the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib.
He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family, and would bring
to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream."
Dune
won the first ever Nebula Award, and shared the Hugo Award with Roger Zalazny
and his …And Call Me Conrad (also known as This Immortal) novel.
In
1984 David Lynch's Dune was released in theaters, and even though it was very poorly
received by critics, the film ultimately found a cult following. On TV, Herbert's sci-fi saga had a different response, with the miniseries Dune (2000) and
Children of Dune (2003) receiving mostly positive reviews.
