To
finish X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer included a little post-credit
scene teasing one of Marvel's greatest villains, Nathaniel Essex, a.k.a. Mr.
Sinister.
The
90-second scene takes place at Colonel William Stryker's Weapon X program base,
which at this point is in ruins. A man in a suit is seen approaching a wall full
of x-rays belonging to Wolverine, pulling one down, and then taking a vial of
blood labeled Weapon X from a nearby refrigerator and placing it inside his
briefcase, which he then closes to reveal the logo for the Essex Corporation.
As
expected fans went crazy with the possibility of having the big baddie raise
his evil head in a live-action film, but thanks in part to producer Simon
Kinberg somewhat vague remarks, we never got the sense of when, until now.
This
past Friday, attached to the Digital HD release of Singer's X-Men: Apocalypse
was a piece of audio commentary confirming that Mr. Sinister will indeed be going
up against Wolverine in the hero's next solo outing.
In
the commentary, which starts as soon as the post-credit scene commences, both
Singer and Kinberg discuss their idea to include a teaser for Deadpool 2, which
they ultimately had to scrap, and reveal that the M. Sinister teaser was a way
to introduce Mr. Sinister for Wolverine 3.
In
the comics Nathanial Essex, a.k.a. Mr. Sinister is a 19th Century scientist
that was genetically mutated by Apocalypse. Armed with a plethora of abilities
including immortality, shape shifting, and telepathy, Mr. Sinister used his
accumulated wealth to fund his demented and obsessive experiments on mutants in
general, and in Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops in particular.
As
for who could be playing Mr. Sinister in the film, Richard E. Grant is probably
the safest bet for now. The actor's character has not yet been revealed,
however it has been described as a "mad scientist", a description
that fits Mr. Sinister perfectly.
Directed
by James Mangold, The Wolverine 3 opens in theaters on March 3, 2017.
