Although most studios have already found a footing in
the shared universe trend, Universal Pictures is just getting started on
theirs. To that end, the studio has acquired the writing and producing talents
of Alex Kurtzman ("Alias", "Fringe") and Chris Morgan ("Furious
7") to spearhead the Classic Monsters Universe for them, which will begin
in full force with The Mummy reboot starring Kingsman: The Secret Service
breakout star Sofia Boutella in the titular role, and Tom Cruise.
Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the
unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from
her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over
millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through
hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising
intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that
ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.
The Mummy marks Kurtzman's second directorial effort
after the 2012 drama People Like Us starring Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, and
Michelle Pfeiffer.
The project also stars
Jake Johnson ("Jurassic World"), Annabelle Wallis ("Peaky
Blinders"), Courtney B. Vance ("American Crime Story"), Marwan
Kenzari ("The Loft"), and Dylan Smith ("EastEnders").
Russell Crowe is reportedly
in negotiations to play a Dr. Jekyll-type character before branching out into
his own standalone monster movie.
The Mummy opens in
theaters on June 9, 2017.
