Warner Bros. has acquired
the talents of Goosebumps director Rob Letterman to helm a Dungeons &
Dragons feature film from a script penned by Wrath of the Titans scribe David
Leslie Johnson.
Roy Lee ("How To
Train Your Dragon") is producing along with Brian Goldner and Stephen
Davis from Hasbro, and Courtney Solomon and Allan Zeman from Sweetpea
Entertainment.
"This new Dungeons & Dragons will be a Guardians of the Galaxy-tone
movie in a Tolkien-like universe. Because when you think of all the Hobbit movies and The Lord of the Rings, they have an earnestness to them, and to
see something fun, a Raiders romp inside that world, I feel is something the audience has not
seen before," Lee said earlier in the year.
This will be the
second attempt at launching a big screen franchise based on the classic role-playing
game. In 2000 an effort was made with Justin Whalin ("Lois & Clark")
leading a cast that included Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans, and Thora Birch who was
coming off the critically acclaimed American Beauty. The movie was followed by
sequel in 2005 and a TV movie in 2012. Panned by critics and fans alike, the
franchise never became the financial success the studio hoped it would.
