Gael Garcia Bernal ("The Motorcycle Diaries") has signed on to
play the legendary Zorro in Jonas Cuarón's upcoming futuristic reboot of the
iconic character titled Z.
The project has been in development for over a decade at 20th Century Fox,
and the actor has been on-and-off from the very beginning when it was called
Zorro Reborn and had filmmakers such as Bryan Singer ("X-Men") and
Ricardo de Montreuil ("Máncora") attached to direct.
Z updates and restructures the old hero story shining a new light on the
character. The masked vigilante who once fought for the rural class during the
Spanish colonization of California in the 19th century will now be taking on
villains in the near future.
Currently being sold to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival, Z will go
into production this fall at the Pinewood Studios in the Dominican Republic.
Bernal and Cuarón recently worked together on Desierto, an immigration
thriller also starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
