Although his English-spoken
debut film was pushed out of the acclaim I believe it deserved, Snowpiercer
director Bong Joon Ho is back on the saddle with Okja, an intriguing fantasy
drama starring Tilda Swinton ("Michael Clayton") and Jake Gyllenhaal
("Nightcrawler").
Written by
Bong and Jon Ronson ("Frank") Okja follows Mija, a young girl who
must risk everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from
kidnapping her best friend – a massive animal named 'Okja'.
"I want
to show the beauty that can exist between man and animal, and also the horror
between them," Bong said of the project.
Besides Swinton
and Gyllenhaal Okja also stars Seohyun An as Mija, Paul Dano ("Little Miss
Sunshine"), Steven Yun ("The Walking Dead"), Lily Collins
("Stuck in Love"), Devon
Bostick ("The 100"), Byun Heebong ("The Host"),
Shirley Henderson ("Anna Karenina"), Daniel Henshall ("The
Babadook"), Yoon Je Moon ("Mother"), and Choi Wooshik ("Set
Me Free").
To be shot in South Korea, Canada and the US, in English
and Korean, Okja will premiere globally on Netflix in 2017 and
will also have a limited day and date theatrical release in the US.
