Yes, in addition to starring as the main antagonist in
the upcoming Luke Cage television series, Alfre Woodard will also appear in
Marvel's Captain America: Civil War, and no, not in the same role.
The casting was officially revealed just a few hours
ago by an e-mail sent to the press, inviting them to cover the Los Angeles
premiere of the much-anticipated movie. A similar situation happened with Julie
Delpy and Linda Cardellini's appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In Marvel's Luke Cage, Woodard plays Mariah Dillard, a
powerful woman in local Harlem politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s
life. In Civil War however, (spoilers) Woodard
has a small but impactful role in the beginning of the film playing the mother
of an American citizen killed during the Battle of Skovia in Age of Ultron. Apparently,
her character has an emotional confrontation with Tony Stark, who she blames
for her son's death. The guilty genius, billionaire, playboy,
philanthropist then supports the Sokovia Accords, which leads to the regulation
of "enhanced individuals".
Due
to timing, it is possible that Woodard was already onboard Civil War when Luke
Cage showed up, but it is strange that the actress is in two Marvel Universe
projects playing two distinct characters, or is it? The casting just shows how
far apart Marvel Studios and Marvel Television have become now that Kevin Feige no longer reports to Marvel Entertainment
CEO Ike Perlmutter.
Captain
America: Civil War opens in theaters on May 6.
