Just days away from its
premiere, the first poster and story details for Syfy's adaptation of Beau
Smith's creator-owned supernatural comic book series Wynonna Earp have been unveiled.
The 13-episode show stars Melanie Scrofano (Gangland Undercover) as the titular gunslinger, an agent of a covert branch of the government that hunts and kills monsters called Black Badge Division. In the series,
Wynonna returns home for the first time in a very long time to pick up the
mantle left by her great grandfather Wyatt Earp.
"She
is a real person," said showrunner Emily Andras, "and she has done
some bad stuff in her life -- not living up to the Earp name, I would say --
but now she's being forced to become a hero."
"I
carry the burden of the family curse, so I come back to [Purgatory] to continue
the family business of putting down the Revenants that keep coming back every
generation," added Scrofano.
Early on in the pilot, Wynonna picks up her great grandfather's iconic Colt .45, the Peacemaker, but, "the beautiful thing about my
character is I didn't need to know anything [about shooting], because she doesn't know anything at the
beginning. She's just a failure at life, and she can suck. Like, they put me
through martial arts training, and motorcycles and guns, and Emily was like,
'But the secret is, you can suck at it all, because as Wynonna gets better, you can get better.'"
Wynonna's colleague
in the Black Badge Division is Xavier Dolls (Shamier Anderson), who offsets Wynonna's
recklessness. "My character is a principled character," Anderson
said. "He's tough, very black-and-white. It's kind of a 'his way or the
highway' type of thing, very passionate about what he does -- definitely has a
heart, definitely cares about Wynonna and his job and the task at hand... He's
definitely the rock of the show, I would have to say. When you're feeling
unsafe and Dolls comes on screen, you're like, 'Okay, he'll save the day...'
hopefully!"
Also in the show is the ageless Doc Holliday played by Tim Rozon (Being Human), who campaigned
to get the role. "I just knew someone else was going to have to do
one helluva job, because I really, really wanted this part, and I thought I
could bring something fun to the character," he said. "[Holliday]'s
been done so well before that I didn't want to do someone else's version. I
just wanted to try to have fun and do my own version of that."
Every hero needs a villain, and for Wynonna Earp that will be Bobo Del Rey
(Michael Eklund), or is he? "This is a show about shades of grey," the
actor revealed. "As you keep watching the show, you start to understand Bobo's
mission, why he's doing what he's doing, and it leaves the audience
questioning, 'Is he a bad guy?' He believes what he's doing is right, just like
Doc Holliday's character; he's the 'good guy'... but is he?"
Premiering April 1st, Wynonna
Earp also stars Katherine Barrell, Greg Lawson, Anna Quick, Dominique
Provost-Chalkley, and Kate Drummond.
