World-renowned
actor and director Takeshi Kitano (Brother, Dolls, Outrage) has joined
DreamWorks upcoming live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's iconic sci-fi manga, Ghost
in the Shell.
The actor is
set to play Daisuke Aramaki, Major Motoko Kusanagi's (Scarlett Johansson) boss
and head of Public Security Section 9, an organization that deals with
cyber-terrorism and cyber-warfare.
Speaking to Japanese news outlet
Cinema Today, Kitano said he wasn't a fan of neither the original
manga or anime, but that he felt the character "gave off a unique presence",
and that he is curious in seeing just what kind of movie Ghost in the Shell will
turn out to be.
Takeshi's
morbid curiosity is justified considering the abysmal western adaptation of
manga or anime. Remember Dragonball Evolution?
Scheduled for
a March 31, 2017 release, Ghost in the Shell follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, the
squad leader of an intelligence organization called Section 9, tasked with The Laughing Man case. The Laughing Man is a cyber-terrorist with an obsession with J.D.
Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye who is a "bitter and vengeful man with a body that is part
robot. He has a unique sense of style and has been described as a bad guy
filtered through the lens of a street artist."
Takeshi's
last Western movie was the 1995 sci-fi action movie Johnny Mnemonic starring
Keanu Reeves.
Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow
White and the Huntsman), Ghost in the Shell also stars Michael Pitt as the villainous
Laughing Man, and Pilou Asbæk as Batou, Section 9's heavy hitter.
