It looks like
Sony is up to their old Spider-Man tricks. Will it gel with Marvel Studios and
Kevin Feige?
With
Spider-Man's latest reboot taken care of (fingers crossed), Sony has begun to
redevelop Venom, a project they hoped to spin out from Spider-Man but that
never swung.
Back in 2014
before the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony announced plans for a
shared cinematic universe centered on Spider-Man with spinoffs that included
the villain-centric Sinister Six and Venom. After the release of the movie however
and following a barrage of extremely poor reviews, Sony halted all of their
plans for the franchise and subsequently spinoffs and begun to readjust their
vision. Sony and Marvel Studios eventually reached an unprecedented deal, and
the studio that brought us Iron Man and The Avengers took hold of the
character.
Now,
according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has tapped Dante Harper to write the
script for Venom, which is being envisioned as standalone franchise completely unrelated
to the upcoming Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland, who will make his debut
as the character in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.
Harper has credits
in a variety of different positions including production manager (in which he
has most credits), sound department, producer, editor, and even actor. He did however
help rewrite Edge of Tomorrow, though he was uncredited for the work.
Venom is intrinsically
connected to Spider-Man, so how they are developing a franchise disconnected
from the superhero is anyone's guess. Created in 1988 by writer David
Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck, Venom started life as an
alien symbiote that required a human host to survive, in return giving him
superhuman abilities. Many writers and adventures later, Venom became an
anti-hero and eventually hero working for the government.
Avi Arad and
Matt Tolmach are still attached as producers, and are overseeing the project.
