Vin Diesel loves
social media, which he has used in the past to promote his projects, including
those that he wasn't yet attached to (see Guardians of the Galaxy). For his latest
announcement the actor took to Instagram to reveal that writer/director David Twohy,
who wrote and directed all three movies in the franchise, will begin to write
the fourth one next month in December.
Furthermore, Diesel
also announced that a TV spinoff of the franchise called Merc City is one the
way. The show will, according to the actor follow, the Mercs and Bounty Hunters
of the Riddick Universe.
Neither Pitch Black (2000),
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), or Riddick (2013) were that big of a
box-office hit that would justify another installment in the franchise, but
they weren't bombs either, so it will ultimately come down to budget. The last
movie made $98 million and change worldwide on a $38 million production budget,
so as long as Diesel and Twohy manage to keep within the same kind of budget I don't
see why Riddick 4 won't happen.
As for the TV show,
it will probably come down to where Diesel takes is it. If they pitch it to Fox
or NBC, odds are it either won't be picked up or won't live long enough, but we
are talking about Syfy, TNT, or even Netflix then their chances rise
significantly.
