We recently found out
that 20th Century Fox has decided to postpone Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 in order
to give Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant and potential sequel some breathing room.
Now however, it seems that despite the hiccup, Blomkamp's Alien project is
still very much alive, kicking, and bursting out of people's chests.
"I know Ridley
Scott is doing his movie first and is going to be the executive producer on this
one, so I’m really looking forward to that," Michael Biehn told Icons of
Fright in a recent interview. "I know that Ridley’s focus is on the second
Prometheus and I’m sure that he and Fox both don’t want that and Neill’s movie
to come out right next to each other."
It makes sense from a
timeline standpoint that Fox doesn't want Scott's prequel and Blomkamp's sequel
coming out roughly at the same time, having said that how long will the studio
keep the South African filmmaker on the backburner now that we know that Scott another
Prometheus sequel coming after Covenant.
Whatever the plan may
be, Biehn seems excited about reprising his role as Corporal Hicks and star
alongside not only Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley but also the next actress
set to play Newt (Carrie Henn played the character originally).
"They’re
planning on bringing me and Newt back, and at this point Newt will be around 27
years old," the actor revealed. "I know that every actress in
Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it’s really a passing of the torch
between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt. It would keep
the franchise alive and the studios would make money, because that’s what the
bottom line is now: money."
The passing of the
torch is one way of keeping the franchise running without having to reboot it, and
sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, so it will come down to who Fox
and Blomkamp cast, as well as fans acceptance of the new torchbearer.
