Sony's plan for a franchise
based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy of novels was a bust. They managed
to adapt the first book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with David Fincher at
the helm, and with Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig starring, but budget cuts and
demands for higher paychecks prevented the trio from returning for the
follow-up, The Girl Who Played with Fire. Despite that, Sony will move forward
with the franchise, just not in the way most expected, as they will go off-book
and will adapt the fourth novel in the trilogy, which was written not by
Larsson, who died in 2004, but by fellow Swede, David Lagercrantz.
According to The Wrap, Alicia
Vikander might be stepping into Mara's shoes and play the lead role of Lisbeth
Salander in The Girl in the Spider's Web, which is being adapted by Steven
Knight.
