It seems like it was
just yesterday that we were discussing whether Harrison Ford would return has
Han Solo for J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and now we have our
second piece of casting for the follow-up, Episode VIII.
British actress Gugu
Mbatha-Raw has joined Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII, where she will
star opposite whoever survives the events of The Force Awakens, yet to come
casting additions, and Benicio del Toro, who has signed on to play a villain.
As expected details
about her role are nonexistent, and if The Force Awakens and Rogue One are of any
indication we won't know until the movie comes out, so feel free to start
speculating as to who or what her character might be.
This isn't the first
time Mbatha-Raw's name came up in connection to the project. A few days ago a
report came out claiming that the actress best known for her roles in Belle,
Doctor Who, and Beyond the Lights, was being eyed by Lucasfilm, however she
wasn't mentioned in the earlier shortlist, which included such names as Tatiana
Maslany, Gina Rodriguez, and Olivia Cooke. Perhaps these are two different
roles, or maybe Mbatha-Raw just jumped in front of everyone.
Episode VIII opens on
May 26, 2017.
