Doctor Who and
Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillan has joined The Spectacular Now and
The End of the Tour director James Ponsoldt's adaptation of Dave Eggers' sci-fi
novel, The Circle, opposite Tom Hanks, Emma Watson, and John Boyega.
Gillan will play
Annie, "a warm, cute, goofy, old-money
confident and fiercely intelligent member of The Circle, an Internet monopoly
that links users’ personal emails, social media, banking and purchasing with
their universal operating system. The result is one online identity and a new
age of civility and transparency — which turns out not to always be a good thing."
Alicia Vikander was at
one point attached to star in the adaptation, but after Ex Machina came out,
the actress was flooded with other offers, and she ended up getting a role opposite
Matt Damon in director Paul Greengrass' next Bourne film.
